Merthyr

Plaid Cymru have been active in the Merthyr Tydfil area for well over 75 years.  We first contested the then Westminster Constitueny of Merthyr Tydfil in 1964 when  Ioan Bowen Rees recieved 2,878 votes, less than 10 years later in the Merthyr Tydfil byelection Plaid's candidate, Emrys Roberts came a close second place with 11,852.  By 1976 Plaid had grown in strength to take control of the Borough Council.

Fortunes have ebbed and flowed since then but May 2026 saw three Members of the Senedd elected from the Pontypridd Cynon Merthyr Senedd constituency.
